Dr. Ukichiro Nakaya, renowned for his research on snow, wrote a
children’s science essay about rainbows in 1947, shortly after World
War II. In the essay, Nakaya points out that careful observation of
actual rainbows reveals features that cannot be explained by
reflection and refraction alone. He provides an explanation that
includes light interference and additive color mixing. Nakaya also
warns against being complacent with a "scientific explanation" and
thinking that one has fully understood it. This is considered one of
the most outstanding explanations of rainbows written in Japanese. |
